Cowrie Integrated Systems is a financial technology company operating across payments, foreign exchange and digital-asset settlement — building the infrastructure that moves value into and out of Africa.
Our story
From telecoms distribution to currency corridors
We have been operating in Nigeria since 2015, when we took on a Nigerian Communications Commission Value-Added Services licence and began distributing airtime and data at scale. That business taught us two things that turned out to matter far more than the margin on a top-up: how to reach a fragmented market, and how to reconcile thousands of small movements every single day without losing a naira.
In 2024 we put that discipline to work on a harder problem. Businesses trading into and out of the region were losing money not on the exchange rate but on the wait — capital sitting idle between an instruction and cleared funds, priced by whoever was willing to carry the risk of the gap. So we moved into cross-border payments, FX liquidity and stablecoin settlement, and we built the infrastructure to close that gap ourselves.
